SU.R Sound & Synthesis Workshops

In conjunction with their first Kaiku residency night, SU.R will host sound and synthesis workshops on Friday and Saturday (September 27th and 28th)! The two-day event consists of early evening courses aimed at both absolute beginners and advanced synth users, and it will focus on sound as a phenomenon in nature, music and music production, electronic and electroacoustic music. The guest lecturer for both evenings is Ernesto Romeo from the band Klauss. The workshops are hosted by Kaiku resident Pedro MacLoughlin. The workshops are in English. Please buy your ticket in advance to attend the workshop. Doors open at 18:30 and the workshops start at 19:00. Workshop attendees are free to stay at Kaiku for the rest of the night by paying the security fee (3,90 €) after 22:00.

First Course (27/09/2024): Electronic Live Set (18:30–22:00)

This workshop will demonstrate various approaches to setting up an electronic live set. Using electronic drums, MIDI and analog sequencers, modular systems, arpeggiators, samplers, and synthesizers, we will explore different alternatives for assembling a live electronic set. The workshop will cover several key topics, including MIDI, analog synchronizations (trigger, sync, etc.), sequencing, DAW integration, controllers, mixing, and processing. Participants will work with and program classic and contemporary instruments such as the Roland TR-909, TB-303, System 100, and Juno 6; Moog and Buchla modular systems; Akai MPC; Antonus Step Brother; Korg SQ; Eurorack systems; Sequential Circuits Pro-One; Prophet 10; Oberheim OB-X; and more.

Second Course (28/09/2024): Fundamentals and Practices of Audio Synthesis and Electroacoustic Sonic Art (18:30–22:00)

We will explore the general structure of different types of synthesizers, analyzing fundamental concepts from the origins of electroacoustic music and providing an overview of their key components — oscillators, wave and noise generators, sources of uncertainty, mixers, filters, amplifiers, envelope generators, LFOs/modulators, random generators, and sequential and manual controllers (keyboards, touch surfaces, wheels, ribbons, joysticks, and processors). We will examine the main features of both current and iconic models, and explore different sound creation techniques using hardware synthesizers—classic, contemporary, analog, digital, hybrid, and modular — as well as software synthesizers. This course will include models like Moog and Buchla modular systems, Sequential Circuits Prophet 10 and Pro-1, EMS Synti, ARP 2600, Roland System 100 and Juno 6, Antonus Step Brother, Behringer, and GS.

Guest lecturer Ernesto Romeo is an Argentinian artist and the leader of the cult band Klauss, founded in 1988. Ernesto has collaborated with some of the most seminal artists and pioneers of the original electronic music movement and sonic art, including Laurie Spiegel, Carl Craig, DJ Hell and Satoshi Tomiie. He has taught in South, Central, and North America, as well as in Europe. The band's recording studio in Buenos Aires, La Siesta del Fauno, is considered a living museum of electronic and electroacoustic music history, featuring pieces from all decades. It has also been featured in Sound on Sound magazine.

The classes offer a unique exploration of sound and technology, featuring original instruments from the 1970s. Ernesto Romeo, a respected performer and teacher, brings these instruments to life using the Danley soundsystem at Kaiku, one of the world’s best-sounding clubs.
